Children throughout the world have been visited by the fairies for centuries. Some mischievous – hiding house keys and moving glasses – and some sweet – tending to the flowers and nursing injured animals. New York City’s fairies decided one day that proper accommodations were in order to make these visits more comfortable. Human homes are overwhelmingly large – even in New York. These fairies felt that pint-sized quarters would allow them to visit human children in much greater comfort. So in 2005, Enchanted Gourds was commissioned by the Central Park Fairy Community to create custom fairy homes. Word spread on the wind and soon fairies from Rhode Island to San Francisco were calling in orders.
Using dried gourds as the basic structure, Emily of Enchanted Gourds adds organic materials and found objects from around the world to decorate unique, one-of-a-kind homes. Each is tailor-made for a particular type of fairy or for a human family. These custom built homes allow the fairies to visit their families – sleeping, cooking, writing, or simply living alongside them. Emily’s furry staff, Butter and Eugene, help sift through materials from the land and sea. They take inventory of all items collected from various parts of the world by Emily and her mindful helpers.
We invite you discover our world of fairy houses – some already placed in homes across the country, some available for purchase. Enchanted Gourds is happy to accommodate custom orders and can incorporate personal items that meet the size requirement. Custom orders generally take 4-6 weeks. Tips on caring for your fairy house:
Please treat your house with kindness and respect. They are delicate creations and cannot withstand rough handling. Many children and parents find them best for inspiration, not playtime.
Remember that these houses are made of small objects that may come off under the force of tiny hands, please keep them out of reach of young children.
If possible, keep your house out of direct sunlight. Organic materials suffer under the sun’s rays and will reduce the life expectancy of your home.
Regular dusting will preserve your house for years to come. We recommend using a feather duster on the outside or a vacuum to remove dust from inside your house. CAUTION: when using a vacuum, keep the nozzle at least six inches from the house. Excessive air pressure will loosen and damage certain elements. If your house has loose items, remember to remove them before vacuuming.
Luckily, owning a fairy house is much less trouble than owning a real house. No roofs or leaky pipes to fix. If you find something has been damaged on your house, please contact us and we will do our best to repair. Fully cracked gourds may be impossible to fix but we will try our best. |
